Covid pandemic has disrupted all areas of civil society and, therefore, also urban mobility, as noted in the 2020 OSMM report (Optimal sustainable mobility mix) “Sustainable mobility for the revitalization of metropolitan cities”. A harmful -and often with tragic consequences- event could provide us with an opportunity to redesign mobility in a sustainable way, to restart with virtuous attitudes and means oriented towards goal 11 of the 2030 agenda, https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals.

In European cities, as in many megacities around the world, the car is the most popular means of transport for people, often used with only one passenger, “willing” to spend more than 60 hours/year in the traffic jam. On the other hand, it is unthinkable for the economy and for essential services to reduce the mobility of goods and people, but it is certainly desirable that soon transport strategies would improve the livability of cities and develop useful behaviors to reduce global warming, CO2 emissions and fine particles. It is important to find solutions to move in a cleaner, smarter and safer way.

Pupils look for and compare data and information on the current state of mobility and its effects. They investigate what is already being done by the Municipality, the Associations, our schools, our families. In fact, it is necessary that the issue of sustainability in a broader sense becomes the focus of the personal growth of each pupil in order to have positive repercussions on social life, on economic development without wasting resources, respectful of the health of our planet and, of course, of our health.

Interacting locally with bodies, organizations, groups, networks (such as local authorities, parent associations, companies, agencies and NGOs) is an excellent opportunity to experience active citizenship and get used to developing a range of skills in verbal and written communication. It is also an opportunity for pupils to improve their understanding of society’s values.
